Facing a Pet Food Shortage?

Sometimes, topics will fall into your lap when you are not even looking. While scrolling through social media this morning, I noticed a particular post on my Nextdoor app about finding pet food for feral cats. The poster mused how there is a shortage, and it's noticeable when shopping as they continue the philanthropic work for our furry friends.  She asked about warehouse discounts, adding that the cost of pet food and the shortage severely affect her work with these animals. 

It had me wondering, is this a problem that affects most animals?  Sure enough, a quick Google search yielded articles since 2021 about the shortage - a result of some of the woes due to the pandemic, according to wusa9.com's report on February 3rd. Not only did factories experience a strain with workers, but also pet ownership soared through the pandemic as folks created a happy and less lonely work-from-home atmosphere.

So There's a Shortage: What Do I Do?

This begs the question, what can we do to help our pets during this time?  What happens when our fave furry animal lacks the nutrients and the treats they so need and crave? As pup-loving personal shoppers, we wanted to offer advice and thought the best way is to analyze the pet food shortage and bring helpful suggestions to light — which could turn out to be long-term solutions in the end.

First, let's talk about what your furry friends like. Do they like chicken, turkey or lean ground beef?  If so, check the ingredients on comparable store brands. As much as everyone loves their go-to brand names for pet food, store brands have upped the ante on their ingredients and sometimes even surpassed the major pet brands. If that doesn't work out, perhaps the solution is exploring making your own delish doggo dishes.
